As a voice teacher, my first job when assessing a voice is to figure out what the student's vocal tendency is. Once I have established whether they are a chest puller, a flipper, a mixer, or lacking chord closure, then I can create vocal exercises to address each issue. You are probably sitting there thinking, "What the heck is a flipper? What does my chest have to do with my voice?" Well, folks, hold on to yer hats because you are about to find out. And once you know what voice tendency type YOU are, it will give you the knowledge and power to address your vocal issues and get the voice you want. So, now its time for you to figure out which vocal tendency type you are! I have posted two diagnostic scale videos, one for men and one for women. Next, do the diagnostic scale video and see which category your voice seems to fit in. Remember this scale is designed to show ALL of your vocal flaws, so don't be disapointed if it is difficult for you. Also, don't be worried if you fit in two categories! Many voices have two tendency types. Start with the exercises for your most pronounced tendency first.
For example, I have had many students that tend to mix, but they still tend to tense up and pull chest before their first bridge. If this sounds like you, start with the Chest Puller exercises, and work towards the balancing mix exercises. If you are a flipper with a breathy, airy quality to your voice, start with the No Chest/Light Chest exercises.
Make sure you have viewed the ""What Vocal Tendency Type Are You?" webpage to listen to examples and hear explanations of each type before you diagnose your own voice. If you are having a really hard time figuring out which vocal tendency type you are, make a video or audio recording of yourself performing the diagnostic scale and send it to me via e-mail (melodymomusicstudios@gmail.com) or post it as a comment. I'll get back to you with a diagnosis as soon as possible!
